Behaviour and Heredity Lab

This week's lab focusses on discussion based around two genetic counselling scenarios. We begin by testing your background reading by giving you a mini-quiz. The aim of the background reading is to ensure that the discussion and role-play is informed rather than entirely wild conjecture - we do not expect you to have detailed knowledge of genetics.

There is no implication intended that psychologists are the professionals who would give genetic counselling, but it is very important for you to recognise that some conditions which might result in consultation with a psychologist are genetically based. For example most cases of mental retardation arise from some sort of genetic abnormality. In this context, it is critical that psychologists are sufficiently aware of things that can be changed, things that can't be changed but can be made less of a problem by appropriate behavioural strategies, and things that actually have no possible resolution ...

It is also important to recognise the difficulties for those who are dealing with genetically based disorders either firsthand, or as family members or friends. Although role-playing of scenarios can be a little "stilted", please ensure that you consider the issues from the perspective of the clients and of the counsellor.

The Scenarios

Fetal Ultrasound Scenario
Huntington's Chorea Scenario

Remember to record the experience of roleplaying the scenarios in your lab diary. We are particularly interested in your insights into the issues rather than your ability to act out a scenario.
