White Belt (10th Gup)
These are some things we need to know for our first grading - I have put
this together from our
classes supplemented with reading on the web and in books. Any errors or
misunderstandings are mine alone
- I am very new to taekwondo.

The Taekwondo Evergreen Tree
| Belt | Korean term | Meaning |
| White | Huin-Saek | Innocence - signifies the innocence of
the beginner |
| Yellow | No-Rang | Earth - signifies the earth from which
the plant sprouts and takes root as the foundations of taekwondo are
laid |
| Green | Nok-Saek | Growth - the plant grows as taekwondo
skills begin to develop |
| Blue | Ch'Ong-Saek | Heaven - the plant grows into a tree
towering towards heaven as taekwondo skills increase |
| Red | Pal-Gang | Danger - warns student to exercise
control and warns opponents away |
| Black | Kom-Jong | Maturity - plant has grown to a
towering tree, indicating maturity and imperviousness to fear and
darkness |

Three-step Sparring (sambo matsogi)
For all movements
One part of the movement is the attack (eg three consecutive punches) and
the other part is
the corresponding defence (eg three outer forearm blocks) with a counter
attack (eg reverse punch).
The movements I describe below were what we practiced one night, but I'm not
sure if they are
set patterns, or we could be asked any variation of these which incorporate
techniques we know.
